Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Michaels.
Paul, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I discovered my love for music when I was a child, and it’s been growing ever since. But when I was 16, I began working for this local DJ company. First, as an assistant. As a “roadie”. It started out as a high school gig, but I quickly worked my way up the food chain. And before I knew it, I was doing solo events as a DJ. At the time, I was the company’s youngest head DJ.
My love for music, and for providing a unique philosophy for providing an awesome experience for our clients and guests, was cultivated around this time as I fell in love with DJing. In college, my passion for DJing intensified. I DJed many fraternity and sorority parties, and local bars, as well as parties for the university itself. Before graduating, I was DJing weddings for other DJ companies. That’s where I learned I had a special knack for weddings. Don’t get me wrong. I love doing all the other events. I love DJing for bars. Clubs. Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. Birthday parties. School dances. You name it, we just might have a DJ specializing in your area. But my true passion? You know how you love what you’re good at? Well, weddings are what I’m good at, so weddings are what I do.
When I first started my company after college, my company name was also my DJ name: “DJ Paul Michaels”. But beginning 2017, we figured was time for the company to grow. And that’s when Paul Michaels Events DJ Company in Chicago was born. Right now, we have 9 DJs and 7 event assistants on our team, and I’m always looking to hire more talented individuals. I love cultivating talent in people who are driven and reliable and display a deep passion for music or DJing. It’s really important that every DJ on our team possesses a real passion for what they do. We’re also still very much committed to our work philosophy. That is, working personally with every single client. I still do this, even if one of my other awesome DJs is meant to perform at an event or wedding. It’s our priority to do everything in our power to make sure our customers have the best possible wedding or event, by going above and beyond what is typically expected from your DJ.
Has it been a smooth road?
We’ve had to overcome many challenges, especially with growth, but we’re constantly improving our processes, requirements, and anything that will improve our customer’s experience at the end of the day.
See, in the beginning, we were a lot like many other DJ companies. But when we began focusing more on adopting a client-centric approach, that’s when things really began to take off for us. We refocused our attention from just doing gigs to focusing on offering something different, unique, and personalized. Events that play seamlessly to each of our client’s preferences and dislikes.
That’s what makes us different. We have all the technology and skill set you would expect from a modern DJ company—but none of the coldness. We love engaging with our clientele because it’s good to remember that we’re working not with numbers, but with real people just like you and me.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’ve traveled all over the country and the world, and the thing that I’d say I love most about Chicago is the people. The people make the city, and the city definitely makes the people. Chicago is a unique city where you can find nearly anything, whether it be an authentic specific type of food, or the ability to experience all of the seasons within 24 hours.
But, I guess that the last comment resonates with the part I like least about the city as well: the winters.
