Meet Patty McGuire of Patty McGuire Hair & Makeup Artists in Western Suburbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty McGuire.

Patty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Because I was a singer when I was younger, hair & makeup has always had an important role in my life. It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized that the hair & makeup combined with a love of making women feel beautiful had become a calling that would change my life forever. As a former salon owner and educator, I gained valuable experience as an artist and mentor. As a contract artist for a cosmetic company, I immersed myself in all things bridal and found it to be a place I never wanted to leave. In creating a traveling bridal team, I’ve been fortunate to surround myself with people who understand what an honor it is to be a part of someone’s wedding day. I’ve developed a team of artists who understand that what we do is a privilege and that each bride is unique and special. I love the relationships I develop with our brides and feel so fortunate to do work that I love. As a team, we commit to fewer weddings in order to provide an exceptional level of service that every bride deserves. As our company continues to expand, we approach every wedding as if it’s our first, never taking it for granted and always growing in gratitude.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
While the road has definitely not been smooth, I wouldn’t change anything about the journey. All along the way have been tremendous lessons that have made today possible. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned along the way is to operate from a place of gratitude. During my early years as a stylist, I worked for a husband and wife team who were so generous and kind to me. They treated all their staff like family and worked hard to create a company that we could all be proud of. I took that kindness for granted as a young person. It wasn’t until I was older that I realized how rare that kindness is. The beauty industry is filled with talented artists. That talent means nothing to me without kindness. Recently, someone commented that I had such kind people working with me. Hearing those words about my team means everything to me. I meet a lot of artists who think that their talent is what it’s all about and who think it’s all about them. I’m sad to admit that I was one of those artists back in my early years. Talent without humility and kindness means nothing. I work incredibly hard to create an environment within my team that is all about service to others. Of course I want talented people on my team, but more importantly, I want artists who care about people. If you come from a place of gratitude with every single opportunity you’re given, you automatically go into that opportunity with the right spirit.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Patty McGuire Hair & Makeup Artists is a traveling team of hair & makeup artists based in Naperville, Illinois. Our team serves Chicago and the surrounding suburbs and travels for destination weddings as well. We specialize in weddings and special event hair and airbrush makeup. We are known for our soft and natural makeup looks, as well as romantic and modern upstyles. The thing I’m most proud of is our approach to the work. We don’t believe in making someone look like a different person on their special day. Instead, we work together to create a soft and natural look that is timeless. We believe in fresh, glowy skin with soft pops of color for a modern and pretty look. I am also proud of my commitment to our brides. I make myself available to our brides seven days a week. We know you have a choice when selecting a team for your special day and we appreciate your business. I do my very best to make sure you know that no one will care more about your special event than we will. We are committed to our education, knowing we are ALWAYS learning and strive for excellence in all we do. What sets us apart from the rest? The difference is in every detail.

What were you like growing up?
Because of my interest in music, hair & makeup were a big deal at a pretty young age. I remember coloring my own hair from a pretty young age as well and often driving my parents crazy over it! People might be surprised to know that I’m an introvert, which is probably why I love the one on one relationship with the person sitting in my chair. Since I can remember, I have struggled with my own self-image and is probably a big part of why I find such joy in making people feel beautiful. I can relate so much to a quote by the incredible talent Kevyn Aucoin when he said “That’s why I began doing makeup in the first place: I was hoping that through helping people see the beauty in themselves, I could try and find it in me”.
