Today we’d like to introduce you to Njeri Kairo.
Njeri, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Funny thing, I needed an extra class in college and nothing was open except photography. So, I went with it. My first photography class in collage, Photography 101 Black & White photography class, I had no idea what I got myself into. I didn’t understand much, matter of fact I failed the class that semester.
Long story short, I changed schools and yet again I needed one more class to be a full-time student and guess what class had one more spot left? Yup! you guessed it Photography. So, I ended up signing up for the class only this time around, I was a little familiar with the darkroom, film paper and how to use a film camera.
All of a sudden, this class was my favorite. My professor, Chuck was such a great teach to learn from. He made it easier for me to understand and was always there to help. I ended up taking Photography 102 next semester with Chuck, that’s how much fun and creative his class was. That how I fell in love with photography.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh definitely not! There are times that I wanted to give up, actually I did give up. working for yourself is the easy. There’s a lot of sleepless nights that comes with it.
The hardest thing I would say is finding my own style. I wasn’t very confidence in my own wok. I compared my work with professionals, I would try to copy some of their work. Nothing I did looked anything like theirs. It just looked horrible. One thing I can pass on that an old friend told me, ‘Find your own style and you will find your passion.’ thanks Yemi. As here we are years later, I found my own style and I fell in love with it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Nkairo Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a free-lance photographer that specializes in weddings and engagements. When I started I actually started doing street photography, didn’t like shooting people. It was easy to do street work. Walk around snap around look for cool things happen etc.
Eventually that got old and I met with a guy named Olu who was and still is an international wedding photographer. His work was incredible. I asked him to give me some few pointers and before you know it he was my mentor. I have come to learn quit a few things from him.
I can now say that I’m very much proud of my work. I love what I see at the end of the results. I have seen how much I have grown and how much I have more I have to learn. I’m not where I want to be but I’m pushing myself every day for greatness.
I believe that my passion and growth is what sets me apart from others. I see where I have come from and that gives me motive to keep going.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My goal is to be an international wedding photographer. I love traveling and why not kill two birds with one stone. I travel within the United states for weddings, I have done 2 international weddings in Kenya and looking forward to doing many more in the near future.
