Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Butts.
Nicholas, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
About 5 years ago, I moved from Decatur, IL to attended Columbia College Chicago. Even though my main passion was to work within the fashion industry I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I decided to major in advertising/public relations with a minor in Fashion Business. This combo made it easier for me to understand the business & marketing side of things.
As I was finishing my sophomore year, I started an internship at a small boutique modeling agency in town. This is where I learned the basics of the industry. After a couple months of hard work, I was hired to be the owners assistant. About a year in that role I took an exam through the state of IL to become a privet employment counselor (Agent) and passed. I was going into my senior year as a Jr. Agent, full-time college student and an intern at Modern Luxury, which is one of the top multi-city publications.
The summer after graduation, I made the decision and took a full-time position at Modern Luxury as the office manager, which was a great learning experience. It wasn’t the job in a fashion that I had envisioned myself taking but I took away so many experiences and connections that I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
That experience help connect me with my current job and boss Bridget Halanksi at MP Factor Model Management where I’m currently an agent in the Runway division.
Has it been a smooth road?
I would be lying if I said the road was smooth getting to where I am now. I and many others in my industry struggle with issues every day and we learn how to overcome those. No matter how long you’re in a position you will always have daily obstacles to jump and grow from.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with MP Factor – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m an agent in the Runway Division at MP Management in Chicago. We have offices in Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Stockholm, Paris, and Milan. I describe our job as playing ping pong with two hands and multiple paddles. On one hand, you’re dealing with numerous clients and on the other, you’re dealing with models, their careers, issues and other things that may arise. This job is more of a lifestyle as you’re on call 24/7 no matter what.
Since I’m on the runway division I handle all live events, runway, Informal, showroom, trunk shows and fit modeling. Our division is known for being the top runway in the Midwest and my boss is known as the top runway agent in the entire US, which it’s a great learning experience for me. I also assist with scouting and development of talent for our division.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the summer season in Chicago and being able to relax on a patio with my friends. The only thing I dislike about Chicago is the winter but personally, I think it builds character.
