Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelson Ortiz.
Nelson, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For as long as I can remember, I have been drawing. Art has always been a big part of my life and a part of who I am. I was that kid in the corner with his sketchbook quietly sketching away. Getting in trouble for drawing all over homework. I started out drawing my favorite cartoon characters and people. As technology evolved, my craft also evolved becoming more specialized in recreating peoples likeness and bringing their visions to life using the latest graphics art technology. I am a self-taught graphic designer I also take time out to create mix media pieces such as clay sculpting, canvas painting, fashion designing and also I am a recording artist occasionally performing at local clubs and festivals. Art has always been an outlet for my creativity, an escape from reality and a way to express my self.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Art has always been such a passion of mine and throughout the years, I struggled a bit to find the right formula to turn my passion into a profitable business. Many years of trial and error looking for the right niche lead me to focus my effort on perfecting my digital illustration skills. After steady growth of a couple years and developing a strong clientele base, I was hit by a drunk driver breaking multiple bones in my hand. I had pins installed and the recovery process took several months more than expected. Going through physical therapy not knowing if I would ever have the dexterity to perform my craft ever again. Took a couple more months to retrain my hands. During the process, I was devastated not knowing whether or not I would ever be able to hold a pencil or even draw again
Please tell us about Full Nell.
Some people call me Full Nell others call me the toongod… I’m known for creating album cover art, custom logos, and most of all for turning people into cartoon characters using the latest graphics art technology. Also known as a trendsetter, a Chicago fashion icon. As a high school dropout, I’m proud of the fact that I am a self-made successful entrepreneur without any formal education or training. My fashion sense and unique style of capturing someone’s essence bringing it to life is what sets me apart from the rest.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Looking back on my growth, I wished I had taken time out to document the milestones of my personal achievements and journey. Maybe enrolling into college for some formal education and networking.
