Today we’d like to introduce you to Nekia Nichelle. She and her team share her story with us below.
Please kick things off for us with some background on Nekia’s story.
Nekia is a digital and broadcast journalist covering entertainment, lifestyle, beauty, and pinch of fashion. She began her career as an executive producer & co-host of a local entertainment show that gave artists such as: Nelly, Robin Thicke, Tia Mowry, Newt Gingrich and Queen Latifah a positive platform to talk about their careers, life and more.
After spending four years as the producer, host, and writer of Flair TV, Nekia currently works as a freelance journalist focusing on lifestyle and entertainment. She’s a contributor for Chicagonow.com, (an online publication powered by The Chicago Tribune), has served as a spokesperson for many brands and provided red carpet coverage.
With the world inundated with negativity, Nekia prides herself on providing a positive alternative news narrative to those listeners who want to laugh.
Nekia has been featured in magazines such as Rolling Out & N’Digo, as well as, on WGN Radio, WVON & Power 92.
Nekia has a vivacious and infectious personality that really knows how to captivate audiences.
Nekia Nichelle has appeared on national and local TV shows as a guest host, correspondent, and expert; mainly, TV One’s Fatal Attraction. Her expertise has been featured on TMZ LIVE, WCIU, CBS 2 Chicago, FOX 32 Chicago, Good Day Chicago, ABC 7 Chicago, and CLTV’s Garrard McClendon Live.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. What are some of the struggles Nekia has faced along the way?
Some struggles that Nekia has faced was trying to find her voice in the Chicago market. Unlike the west coast where they tend to embrace lifestyle and entertainment content, Chicago thrives on death and politics. Nekia has tried to break up the monotony by providing a fresh and lighthearted content which tends to fall on deaf ears in the city.
Also, red carpets can be challenging when studios and PR companies make it their mission to keep black media from having the opportunity to interview A-list celebs. Often times, Nekia will not get the chance to interview certain talent because studios/PR companies feel like since she’s black then that’s the only demographic her audience caters to. Despite the struggles, Nekia has persevered.
We’d love to hear more about her work. What is she most proud of?
Nekia is a Digital & Broadcast talent. She can be seen and hear on many platforms. Many Chicagoans may have heard her giving traffic updates on WGCI, V103 or 103.5 KISS FM. She mainly known for her engaging celebrity interviews. Most recently she interviewed Omari Hardwick (POWER), Amy Schumer and Halle Berry.
Nekia is mainly proud of her TV accomplishments. Her ultimate goal is to have the chance to co-host a TV show or be a resident lifestyle expert on a major network. Nekia has remained tenacious in fulfilling that dream and within the process has had some amazing opportunities.
What was she like growing up?
As a young child, Nekia was very artistic and (as her mother put it) persistent. “When Nekia knew she wanted something, she had a very creative way of making sure she got it”, states her mom. Reflecting on her high school years, Nekia can remember embracing classical music, drawing, writing poetry, painting, dancing — just really being a personification of art in the flesh. Her favorite class was art and she still remembers the name of her art teacher, Mr. Runnion, who was an inspiration to her.
