Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Delack.
Nathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was young, everyone always knew that I was going to be in the video production field.
When I was 12, my Dad bought our family a video camcorder. I started using it to videotape everything around the house. My Dad had a side hobby of rehabbing our home. So, I’d put together videos explaining what he was doing. I also started videotaping weddings and other events. That eventually snowballed into a more professional career. I took classes at NCTV (Naperville Community Television), learning how to produce television shows and later attended Drake University (Des Moines, IA), majoring in TV/Radio Broadcasting. While in college, I worked for two of the local TV news stations; starting as an Editor and worked my way up to Reporter. After graduating, I worked in Chicago as a TV News Photographer and founded Delack Media Group in 2009.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business from the ground up is never smooth sailing. There are always bumps along the way…some bigger or smaller than others. I looked at those bumps as challenges and tried to figure out ways around them.
At the beginning, one of the biggest hurdles was jumping from a Full-Time job in television to something that was completely unknown. With the support of my wife and family, I was able to successfully manage and grow the business during those early years.
By founding my own company, I have definitely learned a lot along the way.
Please tell us about Delack Media Group.
In 2009, I started Delack Media Group exclusively filming weddings. At the time, the industry standard was to have a long, boring wedding video. Most people were embarrassed to show their wedding video to family or friends because of the quality or because it was just too long to watch. I looked at the state of wedding videos and knew we could do something way more interesting. So, we took out the long and we took out the boring and started creating short-form cinematic wedding films. After we filmed a wedding, we put a short trailer online for the couples to share it.
Eventually, other people began seeing our wedding films and said they HAD to hire us.
The clients who hired us to film their wedding also worked at companies that needed videos. So, the wedding work eventually lead to commercial work as well. Every brand out there has a story to tell. I use my background in video storytelling to help brands communicate how they change people’s lives. Delack Media Group produces videos for company websites, events, and social media. We work with clients ranging from small mom and pop shops to large Fortune 500s.
It’s been interesting to watch Delack Media Group grow from the beginning into what it is today.
We started out with weddings but have slowly shifted that into commercial work, which now occupies the majority of our time.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I love the outdoors and nature. Traveling with my Grandparents is probably where a lot of my favorite childhood memories exist. They’d take us to different parts of the country to explore. It was quality time that I won’t forget.
