Meet Nathali Rebolledo of Makeupbynathali in Northside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathali Rebolledo.

Nathali, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My makeup artist journey started when I was 16 years old. I was influenced by these 2 makeup artists that worked at a cosmetics kiosk at a mall. Back then, I was working at a part-time job at a kiosk that sold religious items on the weekends. I was three kiosk down from theirs, I was so intrigued by their makeup application and the makeup they sold. I became friends with these 2 ladies and they began showing me tips and tricks on how to do makeup. Every weekend, when I got paid I would rush to the nearest drugstore and buy makeup items that I wouldn’t know how to use. I bought the basic stuff to do makeup with like eyeshadow palette, black eyeliner pencil, mascara and eyelash curler for cheap at target. After I got off of school everyday, I would spent hours playing and experimenting in makeup. I wasn’t the best applying makeup at first haha! I would look like a raccoon. I kept on practicing and practicing. It was all trial and error. You don’t master something overnight. It takes time and money. I am a self taught makeup artist. I love doing bold color looks to dramatic and dark makeup looks. From then on, I knew I wanted to be a makeup artist. I wanted to turn my hobby and passion for makeup into a career. I turned to social media and started uploading makeup looks. I even did makeup tutorials on YouTube for a while. In 2016, I graduated high school and started working at a clothing retail store full time. I wasn’t planning on going to college.

As time went on, my family suggested I should not waste time and go to college for something that I love. I finally decided to go to beauty school in December of 2016. I knew the perfect school to go to. I had a tour of the whole campus. I loved the environment of the school. The school counselor explain the kind of programs the school offered. There was barbering, cosmetology and esthetics. I wanted to learn more about makeup. My counselor suggested should go into the Esthetics program. The counselor mentioned that the program offered waxing, facials, body treatments, makeup applications and making your own makeup. I was interested and signed up right away. I learned a lot from the program. I spent 12 weeks in the classroom learning about different skin types, skin tones, facials catered to the skin. How the hair grows and how to wax. After those 12 weeks, I finally put what I learned in the class to practice by working at the school spa. Best part about working at the spa was connecting one on one with the client. Making sure they feel great before and after the service. The client satisfaction meant so much to me, knowing they felt confident about themselves. In August of 2017, I graduate the esthetics program. I am a freelance makeup artist now. Have done makeup for prom, weddings and photoshoots.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Although as exciting as it may seem, I had a few struggles along the way, my mother didn’t like the idea of me being a makeup artist. She wanted me to go into the medical feel. Makeup is my passion and interest. Although she still may not agree, she understands that this is what I want to do as a career. Some people didn’t like the idea of me going to beauty school. Despite their dislike of me going to beauty school, that didn’t stop me from going, I went because I want to exceed in my career. An obstacle I overcame was balancing school and work out, I would work early in the morning and went to school at night from Monday through Friday. After I got out of school, I had to do homework at night because I didn’t have time in the daytime, it was hard for 8 months straight. Sometimes, you have to face obstacles in order to achieve your goals and dreams.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would give credit to my esthetic instructor Ms.Toni. My instructor gave me the confidence to strive in the industry. When I first started going to beauty school, I was a little timid and nervous. Ms.Toni saw how timid I was and worked with me one on one. There were times where I wanted to give up and she was right there to remind me to keep on pushing forward and gave me little pep talks. If it wasn’t for my instructor, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today.

My biggest supporters would be my family and friends. My family is very supportive of my career. My family and friends would contribute to my little business by gifting me makeup products or stuff to fill my kit. Also by sharing my social media’s account or spreading the word about my business. My family and friends want to make sure I succeed. I am proud to have a supportive family and friends.

I would also give credit to She Shell Photography for giving me the opportunity to work with her on an amazing photo shoot back in February of 2018. I’m glad I have met her. She is so down to earth and supportive.
