Meet Monika and Jeff Sudakov of Chestnut Street Inn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monika and Jeff Sudakov.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
From dancers and living in Las Vegas to innkeepers, we started innkeeping in 2005. Our inn is the ultimate foodies’ bed and breakfast. We give Chicagoans a much-needed respite from the city, with all the amenities and gourmet cuisine they could wish for. Chef Monika has a Master’s Degree in Cultural Anthropology with an emphasis in food and culture and she brings her diverse education to her Mediterranean inspired cuisine. We also make every attempt to utilize locally sourced ingredients.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
After 13 years in business, we’ve seen just about everything from inclement weather to the economic crisis to the challenges presented by a home built in 1854. But no matter what life throws at us, we get to do what we love and are passionate about and our guests keep us fueled.

Chestnut Street Inn – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a bed and breakfast that also is a restaurant, meaning, you can stay here AND dine here. We do a price fixed menu nightly by reservation. We have stayed true to our Mediterranean roots in a meat and potatoes culture and have introduced many to the spices and flavors of these countries. We also pride ourselves in being LGBT friendly and in serving everyone regardless of demographics.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is not about money. We will never be rich doing what we do. But, we work for ourselves, we work together and we get to do what we are passionate about. That’s all we could ask for. As long as the bills are paid and we have a little left over for an occasional vacation, that’s all we need. The amazing feedback and reviews we get from our guests are a testament to our success.
