Today we’d like to introduce you to Mildred Abonce.
Mildred, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in a military family, my dad was in the service for 23 years. He went off to the Korean War and then the Vietnam War, but once he came back he wasn’t the same. He had PTSD and struggled with no assistance. In the 70’s, PTSD really was not recognized and our family went through the heartache with him. I later went to school and became a licensed massage therapist. I’ve always enjoyed working with others and helping them through their ailments.
I started the center for a couple of reasons. My dad and our family never received assistance to help him through his PTSD. I had also been struggling with physical health issues myself for many years and I opted to go through the alternative medicine route to compliment my treatment. The center was started for veterans to assist them to their road to recovery. I wanted to provide a non-clinical setting that was safe, relaxing and welcoming to veterans.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business always has its difficulties, including a non-profit. As a non-profit, we depend on our donors. We are constantly looking for monetary donations to fund the availability of our services. Initially, it was difficult identifying a location that was affordable. The generosity of a local doctor helped the organization find its home. Additionally, it took time to foster relationships within the community and bring them on board with our vision.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bodyworks for Vets – what should we know?
Bodyworks for Vets is a volunteer-based organization that offers various services such as:
massage, acupuncture, meditation, reflexology, reiki, comfort dog therapy, substance abuse counseling and nutrition counseling. These services are offered at no cost to veterans. We also have a gallery where veteran artists can display and sell their work. A portion of the proceeds goes to the organization. We host various wellness events for the community. Through our organization, clients have access to other support resources. We’ve built various partnerships throughout the military community, small businesses and corporations. Our donations come from personal donors and local businesses. As a company, we are proud that we are able to offer our services at no cost to veterans. Our vision is to be able to do so for their families as well.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
One of our biggest advocates is a local doctor and chiropractic, Dr. Hong Yim, who helped us find our home. He provided guidance, support and mentorship. My family and friends that share my vision for the organization. Also, the many volunteers throughout the years who have supported Bodyworks For Vets.
