Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Austin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After being hurt by a drunk driver in a hit and run accident in 1997, I️ found Pilates. I was entering my 4th month of pregnancy when I was hit. My hips were dislocated during the impact. As my pregnancy progressed and my daughter put on weight my hips got worse. I ended up in physical therapy daily toward the end of my pregnancy. They induced my labor almost 2 weeks early, as my daughter was 9.5 lbs and it was putting way too much stress on my hips.
After delivery, I had several problems with my hips and referred pain down my leg. I was introduced to Pilates as a way to strengthen and align my body. Pilates saved me, I was able to walk pain-free! When my instructor moved I was lost. No one measured up. So, I contacted my old instructor, she introduced me to a few teacher training programs. I️ researched them and found the one that fit with my goals. I began the journey to become an instructor. And dedicated my continuing education to rehabilitation and helping those with spinal issues.
Over the last 18 years, I have added fascial stretch therapy, nutrition, NKT (neurokinetic therapy) Anatomy Trains, golf programs, and personal training to my certifications.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Wow, everyone struggles. When you get into a line of work that is meant to help people you open yourself up to working too many hours. I have a hard time saying no to people that are in pain. That can be a real struggle trying to figure out a work/life balance. Finding great instructors is another huge challenge. I have an apprentice program, at the studio designed to teach individuals to be great instructors. I truly enjoy teaching others to love this work and send them off to teach the same education and passion I have. That doesn’t always translate to those instructors working at the studio.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pilates 212 Degrees, Inc. – what should we know?
We are a Pilates studio that offers private Pilates, and small group classes. We also offer classes on Core align, this system works gait, balance, and stability. We have bodhi suspension classes as well. We are fully certified in fascial stretch therapy. A wonderful way to stretch, hydrate, and help the myofascial system to recover.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My partner in life, Stephen. Without his love and support, I would not have opened my own business. I am a single mother of three. Making the jump into owning and running my own small business was scary. Stephen assured me of my abilities and talents. Almost 4 years later we are truly changing lives! That’s so exciting!!
