Which Came First? is a full-service design, writing, and research consultancy, experienced in helping companies bring their brands to market and to new markets.
We endeavor to provide our clients solutions that are appropriate to their own unique requirements, through a philosophy which honors the timely nature of good design rather than the arbitrary application of current style.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
All of the ups and downs that a small business goes through. Early on, too much dependency on one large client.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Which Came First? – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
At Which Came First? we believe that relevance is the single most important attribute of a successful identity. Design for design’s sake—in what is often the viewer’s first impression—doesn’t help solve unique communication problems.
The best design is based on ideas that are appropriate to the subject, presented in a clear manner, without embellishment. Successful communication establishes a visual language and then states it in a simple, direct fashion. At Which Came First? we strive for that balance of appropriateness and elegance that allows our clients to best present their ideas.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our practice has evolved into a restaurant-centered consultancy–quite by accident–and we enjoy it, so perhaps that focus. We currently work for some great Chicago restaurants and would like to branch out to interiors, uniforms, etc., in addition to the graphic design we already do.
