Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael and Kay Giglio.
Michael and Kay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The candy company was started by my mother Kay in our basement of or Northwest Chicago home back in 1950, in 1985 we moved to Belmont Ave. and opened a small storefront. After 3 separate locations and at the age of 78 she retired.
Then at the ripe age of 80 she was bored and wanted to do the business again so now we operate a commercial kitchen, we are in gift shops also have a thriving ecommerce division and have partnered with Lou Malnati’s pizza for their Tastes of Chicago campaign.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part it has always been a hobby for my mother, but since we have been on the internet it’s turning into something more.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kay’s Candies – what should we know?
We make hand dipped chocolates and specialize in 18 different varieties, we pride ourselves on only using the freshest ingredients with no preservatives or additives. Our specialties are: Rum Fudge Balls, Peanut Butter Crunch and Butter Toffee. What sets us apart is we are one of the last confectionery companies that still does everything by hand with no machinery.
