Meet Dr. Kundan Giri of Melrose Park Pediatrics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kundan Giri.

Melrose Park Pediatrics is an independent family-owned pediatric practice that has been serving the community in the near west suburbs of Chicago for over 30 years.

Dr. Kundan Giri is a board-certified pediatrician with over 40 years of experience. Dr. Giri completed his pediatric residency training at Michael Reese Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Chicago. He has served as Chairman of the pediatric departments at Gottlieb and Westlake Hospitals for several years. He established a pediatric practice in Elmwood Park, IL in 1986.

The practice moved Melrose Park in 2002, after his daughter, Dr. Minal Giri joined him upon completing her pediatric residency. The father-daughter practice has thrived in its mission to provide high quality pediatric care to the families of the Melrose Park area and beyond. They now care enjoy the privilege of caring for several families who are second generation patients. The patients of Dr. Giri senior bring their children back to be cared for by Dr. Giri Junior. It is truly an honor to share such a lasting bond with our families and in an age when medical care often feels depersonalized, this kind of relationship is deeply valued by both the doctors as well as the patients. Our mission is to honor a family legacy, and hence our tag line, “from our family to yours.”

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Medical care is much different now than it was 40 years ago. We have weathered the changes over the decades and many of them have had a deleterious effect on both the doctors and the patients. We have seen the impact that insurance can impact the quality of one’s medical care, the increasing cost of medication, the integration and often intrusion of computers and electronic medical health records into daily practice routines. We’ve survived large systems level changes and strategies for cost containment: the establishment of HMOs in the 80s and more recently the Affordable Care Act and the advent of Accountable Care Organizations. We have watched small private practices get bought out by large corporate entities. We’ve seen private hospitals get bought and sold, transformed, consolidated and shut down. We’ve been told again and again, that we are “dinosaurs” and that we will not survive. It is a challenge to stay afloat in today’s complex health care environment, being pulled in different directions by government regulations, the bureaucracy of insurance. And yet here we are, continuing to fight the good fight and care for our patients with the dignity and compassion they deserve.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Melrose Park Pediatrics – what should we know?

We strive to achieve this by supporting a healthy lifestyle, which includes giving parenting advice, nutrition recommendations, promoting physical activity, recommending safety measures, and administering childhood immunizations. The most meaningful aspect of our work is building trusting relationships with families and enjoying the growth of their children from birth through the college years.
