Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Taylor.
Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from DePaul with an Art and Math major and I thought my dream was to edit music videos. I thought I had finally found the perfect job that combined both my left and right brain. I started working as an editor at Fig Media, a boutique event media agency in Chicago. I soon realized I am much better working with clients than behind the computer and I moved into sales and a producer role.
At the same time, one of the owners James Gustin had a vision of me becoming a member of the DJ team. After some serious vision holding on his end, I finally jumped into assisting a gig (a high school homecoming) and soon realized the absolute fun of being a DJ. At that point, I started interviewing other DJ’s, training with other people, and taking any gig I could get for any budget. I worked hard and said yes to every opportunity. At that time, there were not a lot of females DJing, nor a lot of DJs wanting to DJ private events. So, with Fig backing me every step of the way, I worked hard to brand and market myself in that space.
Now, I have DJ’d over a thousand events, nationally and internationally, and have made a great name for myself in Chicago. I have grown with Fig Media, and still am a producer on many of our creative projects, and I also just finished my Masters In Transformational Leadership.
Has it been a smooth road?
The only smooth road I have ever seen has been in a fictional story! 🙂 But if I didn’t have the dips in the journey I would not know the high points. I have had plenty of struggles. I think one of the things I have struggled with the most and still struggle is with the direction I am headed towards. I have not been a person that has been crystal clear on the direction of their career.
This has been beneficial as well. Instead of focusing on my “end goal,” I focus on being open and in the flow of opportunities, which ultimately has led me to some incredible places. I mean I never would have guessed I would open as a DJ for Maroon 5, ten years ago, LOL.
I am proud of my work ethic and my drive to constantly learn and improve myself. So, the values I have adopted in my life have led me to an incredible career. And at the same time, I think having more of what I want available for me to claim and move towards would serve me as well.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the DJ & Media Producer Fig Media story. Tell us more about the business.
Fig Media Inc. is an award-winning content and entertainment company that initiates original concepts and strategies through the creative culture and skills of the DJ and cultural mixologist. Each one of fig’s projects reflects a systemic understanding of compelling beginning, middle, and end which includes the simple foundations of successful storytelling, narrative, and SEI.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Music will continue to lead culture. Brands and music are now blending, and now it is all about experiences with music. I believe the way we engage with music will continue to change and advance. I see 3D DJ’s projected into multiple parties across the world. I have a friend who is working on technology to send messages through music waves. And let’s be real everyone is becoming a DJ these days, so half of you reading this will probably add a D and J to your name at some point, LOL.
I also think at the same time people are craving the simplicity of one DJ, playing one song after another, with a great sound system. Playing music that connects people to their heart, will never go out style.
