Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Alexander.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Matt. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started our company on a negative working environment that I was currently in – back in 2006 (I was 25) I did a bunch of side work for my previous boss of the company I was working for (handyman, remodeling, carpentry, etc.) and I had gotten “tired” of getting “paid”- he always said, “you get paid when I get paid.”
With that, I was at a local Home Depot parking lot about to go inside with a fellow co-worker that I respected and our “crew leader” Bob when I found myself “venting” about “not getting paid, driving everywhere, etc.” with that Bob said, “what about grass?”I was like, “grass?” I was already plowing a handful (like 6) driveways in the area during the winter. And Bob suggested i “cut grass” for these people. I was kind of a “doe in the headlights.” Grass? I don’t even own a lawnmower because my parents live in an apartment complex.
After that the rest is History!
I bought my first 22-inch mower, weed whip, and small blower from Home Depot and it blossomed into a Lawn Maintenance, Construction, and Design Company that currently has 4 crews that services everywhere! We have been very fortunate to do work for local builders such as Chicago Custom Homes (Neil and David are Awesome!) and Attractions such as Brookfield Zoo! I owe all of my success to my parents Ralph and Anita Alexander. Without them, I would not be where I am. My Dad helped me during the “tough” times of the business and still does! And my Mom helped be “stay level-headed” during all the stressful times and still does!
Some of it is being at the right place at the right time but more importantly working hard and following through!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Most of the road has been smooth. The biggest struggle was when my Mom, Anita Alexander passed suddenly. My Mom was the backbone of our Family and always was there to talk too about tough decisions with jobs. She also was the “voice” of MGA. We still have the “saved voicemail” recording that clients hear when we miss a call.
During the struggles that followed was UN-describable (heartache, fights, losing job estimates) however, luckily we hired an office manager name Nydia Rivera about 4 weeks before my Mom’s passing. Nydia has been a godsend, she has helped to excel the company into what it is now through her compassion, professionalism and hard work.
We would not be where we are now without Nydia Rivera. Since we have added a second Office employee, Vicky Ware, who has put MGA to the next level with her positive, organized and professional attitude!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MGA SERVICES INC. story. Tell us more about the business.
We do everything from Lawn Maintenance, Brick Work, Paver Patios, Hardscape, Design and Maintain. We are most proud of our Day to Day operation. All Customer Service Related.
We are set apart from the other company’s by our GREAT customer Services lead by Nydia and Vicky. If we make a mistake, we call. If we are late, we call. If we complete a project, we follow up.
