Today we’d like to introduce you to Marla Wallerstein.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been making art and objects since I can remember. After getting a BFA & MFA, teaching college and high school art and creating miles of “fine art”, I switched my focus to metalsmithing, started my brand MarLa studio, and haven’t looked back. The collections consist of pieces I want for myself – versatile, meaningful pieces that elevate any look with a subtle, sophisticated rock-n-roll vibe. The collection now extends to leather accessories.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Art making is never smooth; if you’re easily satisfied you don’t grow. I challenge myself daily to do more and better and rely on this ethos to propel my work and brand forward. I’m deeply grateful to be doing what I do. If I can keep doing this, it’s all good!
MarLa studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My philosophy is this – there is no trend, there are no do’s & don’ts. Our nakedness is covered by our armor. Choose the precious pieces that will last and elevate you every damn time you put them on. Choose the armor that reminds you of YOU and projects inner love and outer power. Choose the precious pieces that help you move through this big beautiful obstacle course of life with the vibe of Jagger and the strength of a lion. This is the credo that drives the work and has attracted soulful humans from all over the globe to wear and love MarLa studio.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
If what you do resonates with others, inspires you to do more and be better and creates a sustainable life, then, you are successful. I’m moved by this in whatever form it presents itself and mostly look to other disciplines for inspiration. For example, Kenny Munic is a brilliant restaurateur who created High Tide Poke. Everything he does is so deeply considered, beautifully designed and delicious. I’m wowed by the melding of form and function in his creations.
