Meet Mark Baldino of Fuzzy Math in Old Town

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Baldino.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mark. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Interestingly enough, I started out with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, which taught me how to think critically and problem solve around difficult challenges. I’ve always naturally been drawn to overcoming unique obstacles, specifically in Information Architecture, and felt there was a need in this area for a specialized, high-quality UX design agency in Chicago. Fast forward to 2009, and I founded Fuzzy Math, a user experience design, strategy, and innovation firm helping to solve problems in user interface, with my business partner, Ben Ihnchak.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with any business, we’ve experienced a few bumps along the road; namely, one of the original three co-founders left in our second year of business. This forced Ben and myself to shift responsibilities, reassign work roles, and really take the time to listen to feedback from our employees and make necessary adjustments. It’s all about learning from experience, and since then we’ve aimed to have high employee satisfaction and to “get the right people in the right seats.” We want to make sure our people feel empowered and can focus on the work they enjoy and excel at, which helps grow our business and sets everyone up for long-term success.

Fuzzy Math – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We’re really proud of the team we’ve built at Fuzzy Math – it’s a group of truly great, talented people. At the end of the day, surrounding yourself with smart, caring individuals is really what matters, and with the support and intellect of our top-notch team, we’ve been able to secure notable clients and build our reputation as a strong UX design agency.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was out of the office for a few weeks last summer for unforeseen personal reasons and just about everyone on the team stepped up in some fashion. Not a single project, nor the company overall, missed a beat. We even landed a large contract right when I returned. This is just an example of how important it is to have great, quality people on your team – to support you when you need it most.
