Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret and John Stoch.
Margaret, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was growing up, my mom owned a little grocery store in a small town in Poland where we used to live. As a young girl, I was drawn to helping out at the store. I think that customer service was the part that I enjoyed the most but I was also very interested in the business side owning a store. I always looked up to my mom and was inspired by her ability to successfully run her own business while being a wife and mother to four children. I moved to the United States when I was 16 and by that time I knew that hard work, determination, and sacrifice are the key elements required to achieving life’s goals.
When I met my husband John, he was working in construction (doing mostly roofing and framing), and not to brag about his skills but he was really good at what he was doing. In addition, he loved and enjoyed (and still does) working with wood and truly cared about the quality of his work. Since moving to the United States at the age of 19, he had worked for several companies continuously moving up the ladder from labor worker to a superintendent; however, deep down he also always wanted to have his own company. Therefore, after we got married, we have decided to combine our skills and started our business in July of 2007.
Our business had been thriving and growing over the years mainly on satisfied customers’ word-to-mouth referrals. We moved from a home office to an industrial office space with a warehouse and showroom (which my husband designed and built). We employ 10 full-time staff and we have an additional 20-30 of trusted and trained workers that we hire as needed in busy seasons. This July we will be celebrating our 10th year anniversary with a ribbon cutting ceremony done by the Major of Romeoville.
Has it been a smooth road?
I do not think that running any business is ever a smooth road. In our case, it has not. As we were trying to build the business, we also started a family, and I went back to school to obtain my Master’s Degree in communication disorders. It was and still is a constant struggle with what comes first, business or family? With the hire of office staff my husband and I gained more time to spend with our 3 boys (ages 2, 5, and 9) but there are still days when we had to choose between gaining more business so that we can provide for our family or gaining trust, respect and love from our kids when we spend time with them.
Another struggle that I think has affected us deeply was finding employees that we could fully trust, and which would possess work ethics similar to ours. Thankfully, in the recent year, we have been blessed with a wonderful staff that truly care about our company’s core values and demonstrate exceptional work ethics.
