Today we’d like to introduce you to Marci Morro.
Marci, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I wasn’t into sports growing up, I always gravitated to the arts. I think it was my sophomore year that my high school got a dark room and introduced a photography class. I was among the first students to use it and that’s when I fell in love with film. I carried that love into college where I took more photography classes. I didn’t think I could make photography a career, so I decided to do graphic design instead and ended up graduating with an art studio degree. I got a design job right out of college and worked there for a couple of years. It didn’t make me happy though, it just wasn’t my passion.
I thought I was doomed and just stuck with the design until I noticed there was a change in the wedding photography scene. I was seeing this moodier, documentary-style approach and was loving it! I decided to delve back into photography and started researching, taking online courses, and falling back in love with it. I realized that it was something I could actually do as a career and knowing it was something I was passionate about, I had to try. Well, I started second shooting, setting up styled shoots, and invading my couple friends space with my camera, building up my portfolio!
After I had a good amount of work I launched “Marci Apker Photography”. See, I was dating Zach Morro at the time. A hard-working law school graduate and my soon-to-be husband. He was always on the sidelines encouraging me the whole way. He proposed to me a month after I launched my business. All of a sudden my plate was full, I would be planning a wedding and figure out how to run a business on my own. I started out doing a lot of engagement, family, and boudoir sessions.
When my first wedding came up I did it all by myself. It was great, everything went wrong schedule and weather-wise, but I handled it like a boss! I noticed, though, that I would like to get more angles to be able to tell more of the story that I wouldn’t normally be able to get, so I decided I wanted to start offering a second shooter in my packages. I really wanted someone that understood me and would be the same person working with me for each wedding, so after thinking about it Zach seemed to be the perfect person to train. We are seriously on the same wavelength, so this was genius. I ended up training him and was pleasantly surprised to see that he was a bit of a natural.
The first wedding we did together was in Ohio with an amazing couple.
Zach did an awesome job like I knew he would! I decided that once we were married I was changing my name to our new name, “The Morros Photography”. We were married in July and moved to Chicago in December to start our new life together as a team in many ways! Now that I’m done wedding planning I can focus on marketing and all the little details for our business to thrive in Chicago. We are so excited to do weddings at all the amazing venues Chicago has to offer. We’ve already booked a bunch of my favorite spots! I guess the overall moral of my story is to go after your dreams and never underestimate what you can do!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every road is bumpy, but we always get over them. After the wedding day is over I edit every photo. Editing is a huge part of the artistic process and is definitely where the most time is spent working. I always had this vision of how I’d like to edit, but it was hard creating that vision at first.
It takes practice and you have to educate yourself on all the ins and outs of editing. It’s been a long time coming trying to find my style, but I’m happy to say that I’ve finally honed in on it! A lot of photographers deal with this as they are starting out. As artists, we are always evolving and getting better and better with experience.
Please tell us about The Morros Photography.
We are a husband and wife photography team that specializes in weddings, but also offer lifestyle and boudoir sessions. Our approach is documentary style, we tell your story in the most natural and authentic way. We don’t want to be just another vendor you hired for your wedding, we want to connect with you and build a relationship so that you know you can trust us to capture some of the best moments of your life. We are super down-to-earth and we accept every couple.
Your wedding can be absolutely breathtaking with every detail spot on or it can be just the two of you at the courthouse, as long as there’s a ton of love where we are honored to document it for you. What sets us apart from others is that we truly care about our couples and the emotions that play out during the day. Our viewers can look at one of our photographs and feel like they are peering into the story of this couple in love, we want you to feel all the emotions. We always hear our couples say how comfortable they felt having us behind the camera and we love that!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I believe everything happens for a reason, but if I absolutely had to change something it would have been for me to start our business earlier. Instead of going to college for graphic design, because I was scared, I would have went for photography. It all works out in the end though!
