Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Goldberg.
Marc has Co-authored a new dog book with New York Times best-selling authors, the Monks of New Skete. LET DOGS BE DOGS will be in bookstores starting on September 12, 2017.
In 1969 Marc’s first dog, Gus, came into his life, along with a host of dog related problems. Gus began life as a normal sheltie puppy, but at the age of six months he was hit by a car when he would not come when called. Fortunately, his only injury was a fractured leg.
When the dog healed, Marc—who was only twelve at the time— was enrolled in dog-training school along with Gus. “Teach him so he doesn’t get killed,” his mother told him.
Before long, Marc became fascinated with dog behavior and training. He and Gus competed in many American Kennel Club obedience trials, winning High in Trial at their first dog show and, later, a Dog World Award.
As the youngest voting member of the Philadelphia Dog Training Club, Marc studied under some of the best dog trainers in the country. By the age of thirteen he was training dogs for his schoolteachers and other private clients. Marc now runs a boarding school for dogs at his Little Dog Farm in suburban Chicago, teaches training classes, conducts private lessons, gives behavior consultations via Skype, and helps thousands of people improve their relationships with their dogs.
Marc is past president of the International Association of Canine Professionals, an inductee of the IACP Members Hall of Fame, and a recipient of the association’s CDTA and PDTI titles.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is not easy to learn what a dog is thinking. That’s because we are human and they are not. So a dog cannot tell you what is on his mind. Yet, they constantly communicate with us and are very open, guileless creatures if we only learn to listen. So it was a very long course of study both self-taught and mentored to come to the top of my craft. It has not been an easy journey, but dogs are worth it.
ChicagoDogTrainer.com – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
ChicagoDogTrainer.com offers consultation services in which we listen to your problems and give you step by step advice on what changes you can make at home to begin to get better behavior. Bad dog behavior almost always means the relationship needs some tweaking and we can help in that area. Everyone loves their dog, but what precisely to do for them is often a mystery. Also, we take dogs into our boarding program and work directly with them for two or three weeks and then help the owner transition the trained dog home for a better and happier relationship.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I often receive letters from old clients after the dog has passed away, thanking me for having given the client and the beloved dog so many happy years together. But I think the best moments for me come when I reunite the dog and owner together and see the joy they both experience in working together.
