Today we’d like to introduce you to Malcolm Rogers.
Malcolm, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
RMS Movers was started with 2 core values, offer affordable quality service and give back to our community. In 2011, I lost my best friend and nephew and since that year I vowed to help create opportunities to help keep the youth off the street. When RMS Movers first opened, I was a teacher’s assistant and every day after work after convincing my father to let me use his 14-foot box truck I would meet up with my best friend Alex every day and do moves for college students from the University of Illinois in Chicago. Since opening in 2012, we prioritize customer satisfaction as we offer services that range from full service packing, labor only jobs, commercial moves and even low income transfers. Additionally, we donate and partner with nonprofits to help reduce youth homelessness and hunger. Every move we do is for a purpose and we have committed to do our part by picking up donated can goods from all of our customers and donating $1 per move to their organization to assist in the fight. RMS stands out because we not only aim to deliver our customers’ items with quality but also a hot meal and housing necessities to families in need.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course not. Running a small seasonal business is very challenging. We have in counter all types of obstacles from not being able to get financing, to having outdated equipment and of course staffing. These struggles have really helped develop our company causing us to take different perspective and get creative with our strategy. Understanding your customer habits, proper planning and preparation and being discipline with your budget really help us create the separation from your competitor. Ultimately having good mentors such as my uncle Steven Rogers has really helped make necessary business pivots.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the RMS Movers story. Tell us more about the business.
Rogers moving services (RMS Movers) is a professional moving company in Chicago that provides fully equipped moving services for residents and businesses throughout the Chicagoland area. Our services are provided by professional movers and advisers with excellent customer service skills. Our services range from full service moving and packing, labor only jobs, and our specialty office relocation.
We are known for our affordable rates and our 5-star customer service. Moving is one of the top 5 most stressful things to do in life and our motto “Moving Made Simple” which we have committed to help minimize the customer stress level by overly communicating with them and hiring customer orientated movers.
2016 showed to be a good year for us and we were honored with the best mover on Thumbtack for the second year in a row and award our first super service award on Angie’s list. Although these awards are great accomplishments we are most proud of our partnerships with the non for profit organizations. Currently we partner with move for hungry who donates over 7,000,000 lbs. of food and we have committed to not only help gather food for our customers but also donating $1 per move.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I do not believe luck has play a major role in my business or life. I believe there three simple keys to having success which are perseverance, consistency and adaptability. I have never been the smartest person in my class but have always been a hard worker and understood that consistency and good communication bring success. I believe a key skill that is often overlooked is the ability to make a personal or business change when needed. I always try to look at all situation from every angle to identify the opportunity and analyze the outcomes. Timing is very important to making decisions acting fast enough to maximize the benefit but detailed enough to identify all risk has lead me to great success.
