Meet London Walder of London Walder Interior Design in Wicker Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to London Walder.

London, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in a small town, exploring and creating, I quickly realized I was able to find beauty in all things. As a child I knew I would eventually work in a field surrounded by art and beauty. While constantly expressing myself creatively through clothing design, experimenting with different mediums of art and countless others creative outlets, I
decided to pursue a degree in Interior Design. After learning the technical side of the field, I began my creative journey in developing my perspective as a designer. While working for some of the top firms, showrooms and manufacturers in the industry, I gained real world experience. Just under a year ago, I reflected on everything I had learned, applied it to my personal stance on the design process and started my own firm. While the firm is still in the start-up phase, I am overflowing with gratitude at the rapid success I have experienced. I feel a great deal of pride having the opportunity to design beautiful, functional and easy to live in homes for my client families.

Has it been a smooth road?
Pursuing a dream
is never easy but I feel fortunate to see the obstacles as opportunities to gain strength and grit. Every bump in the road presents a new lesson prompting me to become a better business owner and gaining a new perspective. Although I have been fortunate and have not had major struggles, minor struggles are inevitable. I look forward to my continued path as an interior design firm owner: learning, growing and perfecting my craft.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the London Walder Interior Design story. Tell us more about the business.
My personal approach to design implements a process that organically determines a client’s style and design needs without the client’s direct explanation. I design with intention from the perspective of the client and their family. In addition to my process, I use intuition giving me the ability to design homes that are purposeful and unique to each family. I specialize in residential projects of all sizes and styles from new construction to individual room design. In addition, I design and oversee gut renovations
while offering my team of trade professionals. When designing homes, I incorporate pieces from the past ensuring curated, unique and timeless homes.

How do you, personally, define success? What’s your criteria, the markers you’re looking out for, etc?
To me, success is taking chances, finding opportunities to learn from others and applying those lessons appropriately. Success is having the ability to hear feedback and translate it into a constructive plan for improvement.  As a designer, I define success in numerous ways: One way is having the ability to connect with a family, learn their story and design needs, and design a home that surpasses their expectations—finding ways to improve day to day functions in aspects they previously did not know needed improvement.   I enjoy learning what each client connects with and recreating that feeling of connection in unexpected ways throughout the home. A successfully designed home creates an overall feeling that is not defined by the individual items, but the emotions experienced while occupying the space.
