Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Lally Kerman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve started out with Salon 1800 in January of 2003. I began as an apprentice, 5 months later I began as a Hair Dresser. I worked at the Old Town location for 8 years and then moved back over to the Lincoln Park location after closing Old Town with the downturn in the economy. After having 2 children and getting them off to school, I felt ready for the next step. In May of 2015, I became the owner of Salon 1800. We have an amazing staff of Hair Dressers, Aestheticians, and Nail Technicians.
Has it been a smooth road?
There is always so much to learn, especially as a new business owner. I feel blessed to say that for the most part its been pretty smooth. One of the biggest challenges I find are the cost of property taxes in the City of Chicago – can make it tough for the small business to survive.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Salon 1800 story. Tell us more about the business.
Salon 1800 is a full-service salon located in the heart of historic Lincoln Park. We are proud to call Armitage Ave our home for over 27 years. We are so happy to be a small business amongst such a great community. We also serve people from all over the city as the CTA brown line is 2 blocks away.
We do cuts, color, blowouts, special occasion hair, keratin treatments, extensions, makeup, airbrush tanning, waxing, lash perms, last tinting, brow shaping/tinting, I would say we are known for our balayage and waxing. I’m most proud of the staff I have. We have such a talented group of Hair Dressers as well as our amazing Aestheticians and Nail Technicians. Our support staff really cares about our clients and delivers amazing customer service. What sets us apart from others is our comprehensive service offerings.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We have to continue to do everything we can to help the environment. Salons need to be conscious now and always of the waste we produce. Companies like Green Circle Salons help salons to do as much as possible to recycle & dispose of their waste. We have to do better!
I also believe the future is now, we have become an online world and will only continue to grow in that direction. We have moved into a world where you have a generation growing up never knowing anything but the internet. This should affect the way we do business. Hair salons need to have constant accessibility. A strong, online presence is critical to a business’s survival. One of the most valuable assets of a salon is data. We have to think big, think new, but most importantly think quick!
