Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Wolf.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up I was a competitive figure skater, and always loved being active. I retired my ice skates at age 18 when I went off to college at Indiana University. After that, I was never able to find a workout routine that stuck. That was until I moved back to Chicago for graduate school and took my first Pure Barre class.
I was instantly hooked, although at the same time I was asking myself what just happened to my body, and what is this shake all about? I quickly became obsessed with Pure Barre and started seeing results after about 10 classes. I honestly could not believe it, I found a workout that worked and I loved doing at the same time. Pure Barre is a killer workout but also an awesome community and I quickly knew I wanted to open my own Pure Barre studio.
Prior to opening Pure Barre South Loop I worked at the University of Chicago Medicine and spent a lot of time in the South Loop. I noticed that there was one thing missing, no Pure Barre studio. I knew that the South Loop would be a perfect location for a studio and that I had to do it. I proposed a business plan to my Dad, and he encouraged me to follow my dreams and open my own studio.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wish I could say it has been a smooth road. The Pre-Opening process was one of the toughest times, ever. I was working a full-time job and trying to open a studio. We had many setbacks when it came to finding the perfect location, and construction. It took 7 months and 3 different locations to find the perfect spot for the studio.
After that I thought it would be smooth sailing, I was wrong. Construction was supposed to take 3 months tops, well it ended up taking 7 months with many roadblocks. I remember at the end of construction I told my contractor “the studio is opening July 1, I do not care what needs to be done, but the doors will open”. He thought I was joking, but I wasn’t and we opened our doors July 1, 2017.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Pure Barre is a total body workout. It is driven by music, fueled by technique, and powered by community. We offer two different classes – Classic Pure Barre and Pure Empower. Classic Pure Barre is small isometric movements that work to tone your body. Our goal is for long lean muscles. While Pure Empower is more cardio, and more sweat – in that class you use ankle/wrist weights as well a 6-inch platform.
I am so proud of the community we have built at PBSL. Watching the relationships form from clients to friends is amazing. We could not have been luckier with our community. It does not matter what kind of day you had, good or bad, as soon as clients walk through the door they are able to focus on themselves and become a better, stronger version. Clients are now friends and encourage one another to reach their goals.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a competitive figure skater and traveled the world representing Team USA. I was obsessed with ice skating and nothing else. At school, everyone knew me as the “ice skater”. I am the oldest of four and some can say I was bossy growing up. At a young age, I always loved helping others, I would volunteer at the hospital in town, as well as the humane society.
