Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Giordano.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My husband Phil and I have a roofing company together that has been in business for 20 years. About 5 years ago my son Phillip started college and then realized college was not for him., so we decided to open up Velocity Roof Vac Service. After doing some research and talking to people in the industry we found that this service was lacking in the Chicago area. My husband and I decided to open up a company so we could teach our son about having his own business. We opened up Velocity as something he could learn and then take over one day. In the meantime, me and my son Phil work together. From bidding jobs to schedule, talking to customers and servicing them better than any other vacuum company.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first year we were slow and we needed to figure a way to attract customers. We also struggled where to recycle the stone that we vacuum.
Western suburbs are easy but northern suburbs have no place to dump so my drivers have to go the long distance just to get rid of the rock we vacuum.
Other than that, we have been pretty lucky and have grown into a sizable company where we can have employees and make a living.
Velocity Roof Vac Service – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our company vacuums gravel off flat rooftops, such as schools, hospitals, and strip malls. The gravel is there to hold down roofing system. We service the roofing industry so our customers are 98% roofing companies. They love our service and are surprised when we show up. Apparently, my competition doesn’t show up when they say they will so they love us when we do. My customers are always telling me they like the way we set up our jobs and my men are polite.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is knowing that I don’t have a college education. I don’t have the best vocabulary and writing skills, but I can run two small successful companies myself. I run the office of my husband’s company Armor Shield Construction and at the same time, I am running Velocity. I do all the office work alone, which includes proposal, invoicing, payables, and accounting. Anything that would be office type work. I consider myself lucky.
