Meet Lawrence Pincus of LPA Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawrence Pincus.

Lawrence, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I attended Purdue University in W. Lafayette, IN and received a B.S. in Biology with a double major in Clinical Psychology in 1977. I then went to University of Missouri-Columbia and got an M.Ed. in Agency Counseling and an Ed.S. in Family and Group Counseling. I worked at a mental health center in LaPorte county, IN and then as an addictions therapist at a hospital on the south side of Chicago. I began seeing people in private practice on part time basis at a family practitioner’s office and by 1983 was in private practice full time working out of 5 different family practitioner’s offices. I have maintained offices in LaPorte and Porter counties since then.

Presently, I have offices in Valparaiso and Michigan City. I have five other therapists who I supervise and work in these offices as well. We see small children to elderly couples in individual and family therapy.

Our Mission Statement is: We respond personally and immediately to families, couples, and individuals seeking counseling services; providing excellent, confidential, and affordable therapy when and where our clients need us, throughout Northwest Indiana.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It is challenging to recruit excellent therapists and have them stay in the practice.

Getting insurance companies to pay in a timely manner is out biggest ongoing obstacle and challenge.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are most proud of the fact that we will give a person an appointment within 24 hours of them calling to request one. This is something that no other provider or group of providers are willing to do. In addition, we answer our phones with a live person providing excellent customer service. While I specialize in working with families, couples, and addictions the other therapists specialize in working with children and their families as well as adults with any mental health issues. I also offer a free Griefshare group at the First United Methodist Church of Valparaiso on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. My wife, Debra Pincus, is a retired and licensed special education teacher. She provides academic tutoring and advocacy for students with special needs. Many of the children who come into our practice have special needs which aren’t necessarily being adequately addressed by their school. Debra consults with the parents and teams up with the therapist to formulate a customized treatment plan to address both the learning and behavioral issues that the student is struggling with. Parents appreciate that our practice is unique in being able to address all of their children’s needs within one practice. We are very proud of the excellent reputation that we have built over the past four decades in Porter and LaPorte counties.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York and enjoyed the cultural and sporting events in the city. I played almost any sport in the streets of Brooklyn with my life long friends. While I was at Purdue, I returned to New York in the summers and drove a cab in Manhattan following my junior and senior years of college.
