Meet Lauryn Schalk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauryn Schalk.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was always the photographer who said I didn’t want to do weddings. They are tons of pressure and high stress. But in 2012, after photographing families and high school seniors for two years, my aunt and uncle asked me to photograph their wedding. I agreed as it would be a good way to test the waters. I was immediately hooked! There’s nothing quite like capturing the moment a couple officially becomes married. The tears, the laughs, the joy; it’s all something I clicked with instantly.

I went full time with my business in 2014 after growing it on the side for four years. It was then I knew I wanted to focus on weddings and engagements. My first year full time, I photographed 2 weddings. In 2018, I am now photographing 24 weddings! It has been so exciting working hard for this dream of mine and seeing what I define as my success coming true.

Please tell us about your art.
I focus on photographing couples and weddings. My style of photography is very vibrant and authentic. I like to keep my art very natural so that the images are representative of your visual memories. I strive for my work to stand the test of time so that when my couples are reminiscing their day on their 50th anniversary, the images still speak to the beauty that day held for them.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
In the world of photography, it’s hard to even get your feet wet without an initial investment. The equipment is expensive, but I believe that photographs are made by people, not equipment. Sure, a great body and glass is going to help, but if you have the eye and can compose an image, that’s more than half of the battle. Good equipment comes with time and it’s certainly not impossible to get going without it!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
