Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauryn Keenan.
Lauryn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had a corporate job for many years, and wanted something different. I saw this store on Martha’s Vineyard, and thought that this concept would work in Chicago. I found out the owner of the store was just starting to franchise. we worked with her to get this store stocked, and up and running. at one point, there were around 6 additional locations, but all but two closed pretty quickly; the Mall of America location and Chicago are the only stores still in business. it became apparent that we had a different demographic than the flagship, and while we still had the same aesthetic, we were heading in different directions, and there was no value in being part of a larger network of stores. We cut ties with the franchise, very amicably, and became an independent entity about 5 years ago. in august we will have been in business 10 years. We are so fortunate for all of our loyal customers; many who have been with us from the beginning.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always struggles, but going in to it with a 100% positive attitude was key. Failure was not an option. The challenge is always finding new, exciting merchandise so our customers don’t get bored. Ee love turning people on to the latest trends, or an exquisite, rare stone we find irresistible.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Beadniks – what should we know?
We have a wide variety of semi-precious and precious stones, organic beads, Czech glass, freshwater pearls and chains made to order in many different finishes and sizes. We actually have so many types of beads and stones, it would be hard to list them all. We also sell artifacts from Thailand, Africa and Indonesia. Basically, we have anything you would need to craft your own custom piece of jewelry. You can also design it, and leave it for us to fabricate. In addition, our store is also a jewelry boutique, with necklaces, bracelets and earrings ready for purchase. Our customer service, by far, sets us apart from the rest. we are always here to help, or you can attend a class in order to learn a new technique. We also do parties for children and adults; weekends are filled with bachelorette parties, showers or girls’ nights out.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My ability to wear many hats. I have done so many different jobs in my life; nothing is above me. I went from a double major in Finance and Sociology, to working in bars and restaurants, and then to earning my law degree. The store is challenging, but it is such a joy to be here and see what we have built.
