Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Schumacher.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago and went to college at Loyola University of Chicago. New York University College of Dentistry is where I received my dental degree from. I moved back to Chicago and started as an associate dentist in a suburban practice before starting my own practice in the Sears Tower. In 2015, I decided to move a block and half away and design my own dental office.
Has it been a smooth road?
I was pregnant while building my new office with two other children at home. I was worried about my patients from the Sears Tower not leaving the building and staying with my practice. Starting a dental office from scratch involved picking out every piece of equipment, decoration, software, etc. there were so many choices and tough decisions to be made.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Laurie Schumacher DDS story. Tell us more about the business.
I practice general dentistry where we do cleanings, crowns, veneers, whitening, implant restorations, fillings, gingival recontouring, TMD treatment as well as sleep apnea oral devices. Our office has Cerec machine that makes crowns and veneers in office without sending to a lab. We cater to busy business professionals so providing same day veneers and crowns showcase our efficiency.
I am most proud of being a respected female dentist and building a successful business in a male dominated profession. I feel my honesty and ability to relate to patient’s needs sets me apart from others. In a world of “car dealer” dentists, I don’t try and sell people on services. My job is to educate them and let them make an informed decision.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Unfortunately, I see the industry moving more towards the corporate model. This type of practice is a “drill and fill” atmosphere without any personal connections with the patients nor longstanding relationships.
