Meet Laura Egan of Whine & Cheese Photography in Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Egan.

Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved photography and had taken courses through High School and College to improve. After years of taking photos as a hobbyist, I decided that I wanted to make photography my career. I jumped right in and now nine months later my business is thriving! I’ve been extremely lucky to have such wonderful clients and support from my family and friends. I have a newborn studio in West Joliet and enjoy doing all types of photography!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are struggles with any business, and on my own, I had to really throw myself into building my own unique business. There is so much talent in our region, and it can be difficult to start a new business when the established talent is so well-respected. I learned how to build my own custom props and setups, and spent hours on my education to learn new techniques. If you ask my husband, our biggest challenge is finding places to store all of the props!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Whine & Cheese Photography – what should we know?
My specialty is newborns and families, but I love all types of photography. My passion is newborns because I am able to bring so much more creativity to the session, from building props to bringing together color schemes. Of course, it helps that babies are tiny and perfect! I love setting up themed mini sessions as well because I get to go shop for awesome new props to use. I’m proud of the growth that I’ve seen in my own skill and I continue to expand my offerings and experience.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the most important quality is flexibility. This particular career is reliant on the weather, the moods of children, and the sleepiness of babies. It can mean essentially working on call at times, and chasing the sun some weekends! I also allow newborn clients a flexible start time so they can leave time for things like feedings and diaper changes if situations arise without worrying about being late.
