Meet L.B. Dunbar of L.B. Dunbar, author in Northside

Today we’d like to introduce you to L.B. Dunbar.

L.B., let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started… once upon a time. Seriously, if you love to read, those might be a few of your favorite words, and the story of my authorship begins in quite the same way. I love to people watch. One day, while at a small town festival, I observed a man and his daughter. They had an interesting relationship – where he looked sad and brooding, she was a ray of sunshine.

My imaginative brain made up their story, and the rest, as they say, is history. That book took three years to publish. The first was the original encounter. I typed the story just to get it out of my head, thinking I’d never do anything with it but put it down on paper. But the following year, I saw that man and his daughter again. Same small town.

Same festival. Only a brief glimpse of them. and I came home, took out the story, and reworked some details. Then set it aside. Again. Finally, another year, another sighting, and that was it. I knew I had to publish. In June 2014, my first book hit Amazon. I’m an independently published author. Almost four years later, I’m at book twenty-one.

Has it been a smooth road?
Gosh, is any road smooth, especially in Chicago? No way has it been easy but there’s small glory in bumpy roads. We learn from our mistakes. Or at least, we hope to. I’ve had all kinds of trouble with other services in the independent publishing industry, but I have so many triumphs as well. The beauty of books is the collective love of them from readers. We like books. We like to talk about them. I’ve made friends I would have never met in life without the risk it took to publish a book.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business includes only me – I’m an independently published author of romance novels. Love is my specialty. The romance tales I tell center on the trials and triumphs of falling in love for characters from New Adult (24-35) to Mature Adult (love over 40). My stories include several sub-genres within romance: small town; rockstar romance; MMA chaos; rom-com for the over 40; suspense, and paranormal romance under the pen name – elda lore.

It’s a plethora of reading experiences! The thing I’m most proud of in my writing is the variety I offer and the ability to push myself to new levels in storytelling. No two stories are the same, and I take pride in that. One thing that sets me apart – at the moment – is my focus on writing stories for an older reader about older relationships. Love over 40 still exists, and one of those stories takes place right here in Chicago!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Seeing as I write from home, I can’t speak to overall business practices of the city, but I can say that Chicago offers a multitude of places to “get” stories. A stroll down any street in the loop offers a variety of make-believe tales. Just look at the faces of all those people! There are also our amazing sporting events – people love a good sports romance or the extensive theatre opportunities. Chicago is a great city. Not to mention there are many publishing houses and agents, city colleges with a focus on writing degrees, and tons of bookstores. We love books in this city!
