Thanks for sharing your story with us Kyle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My introduction to the floral industry was at a very young age, having been practically raised in a flower shop. My mother and grandmother opened their first flower shop, Shamrock Garden Florist, located in Lombard, IL in 1987. As I began to get involved in the business, being the oldest of four boys, the family joke was that my Mother and Grandmother should have opened a construction company rather than a flower shop… Nevertheless, before I could even drive they would arrange to have a delivery driver pick me up from school to help process flowers. Over the years I became more and more involved in our family business, assisting with the opening of our second location in Riverside, IL in 2008. Immediately upon graduating from Elmhurst College in 2013 with a degree in business, we were presented with an opportunity to purchase a flower shop right in the heart of Elmhurst, Carousel Flowers. Backed by a team of extraordinarily talented designers, we have made it our mission to provide each and every customer with outstanding customer service, and beautiful floral designs made with the freshest flowers possible.
Has it been a smooth road?
No business is without its struggles; but family businesses experience special kinds of difficulties. Our biggest struggle came nearly three years ago with the passing of my Grandmother. To lose a founder of our business, a mother and a grandmother, proved to be a very difficult hurdle for our small family business to overcome. It was through the support of our employees and the loyalty of our customers that we persevered through that struggle and have become a stronger company.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Carousel Flowers by Shamrock Garden Florist story. Tell us more about the business.
Carousel Flowers by Shamrock Garden Florist is a full-service flower shop. Not only do we offer wedding and event floral decor and set-up, but we are here for our customer’s on a daily basis to offer flowers for all of life’s occasions. Around town we are known for the quality of our fresh floral bouquets as well as the one-of-a-kind gifts that our customers can find in our shop. The building we are located in, which was once York State Bank back in the 1920’s, is brimming with history and small town charm. Our loyal customers that frequent Carousel Flowers know us by name as we do them, and we like it that way!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I don’t anticipate any drastic changes to our industry as a whole. The floral industry is fairly straightforward. The occasions that call for flowers today will still hold true 5-10 years from now. It is clear that the internet will continue to play a larger and larger role in our industry, and I hope that consumers will continue to value the brick-and-mortar flower shops and the character that they bring to a community.
On a smaller level, what has changed and will continue to change over the years is the specific floral trends. To me, this is most noticeable with weddings. One year everyone wants the very tight and compact designs with no greenery visible and before you know it brides want their wedding flowers to be airy and garden-like with a just-picked look. These trends are continually changing and for the most part unpredictable, but we continue to adapt to these changing trends to provide the perfect fresh floral arrangements for any style choice.
