Meet Kyle Szeto of Kyle Szeto Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Szeto.

Kyle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, my parents always had a camera on them to document my brother and I’s childhoods, resulting in albums being created every year. I always loved looking back at them to reminisce on our memories and family adventures. Fast forward to my 21st birthday, I decided to buy my first camera to document different aspects of my life and the world around me. I was hooked on using my camera as much as possible.

How I started photographing wedding was a serendipitous journey. I never thought I would end up photographing weddings but in 2016, a friend of mine asked me if I was interested in photographing a wedding.

Being a romantic, I leaped at the chance to document the celebration of two people proclaiming their love with family and friends. I was immediately hooked on the energy of a wedding day as well as how different each wedding is reflective of the couple’s personalities. It is such an honor to be a part of this special moment in people’s lives and have the opportunity to tell their love story through photographs.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest challenge for me has been a work-life balance. 2017 was the beginning of my journey to become a wedding photographer, I was working a full-time job, planning my own wedding, and starting a business from scratch. There were plenty of times where I was exhausting myself because there weren’t enough hours in the day to do what I wanted to do. However, with the community of wedding photographers, I was able to learn so much from their experiences and apply them to my challenges.

Please tell us about Kyle Szeto Photography.
I am the owner of Kyle Szeto Photography, a wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Chicago. My belief is that every couple has a story, and each story is completely unique. I would say my style is relational and photojournalistic in that I prefer the real and authentic moments over perfection. I photograph my weddings and sessions naturally as they unfold and I want my photos to elicit an emotion when my couples go back through them.

It is such a rewarding feeling when couples start their session feeling uncomfortable or awkward, but are completely at ease and having fun by the end of it. We build a relationship from the first meeting to their engagement session to the day of their wedding, and by then, they are completely comfortable with me.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
The only thing I would do differently would be to buy my first camera earlier, instead of waiting until my 21st birthday! Other than that, I would not change my journey at all because everything that has happened helped shape my photography to what it is now.
