Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Deming.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kyle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started the company in 2004 when I was a Senior in high school, along with two of my good friends. We were fascinated with technology and we believed that the web was really going to take off.
Initially, we operated the company on nights and weekends as we all pursued college degrees. After we all graduated, we found ourselves working in different web agencies. One day in 2011 we got talking and asked ourselves the question – why not do Wojo Design full time? We all had the experiences and skills necessary to run a full-time digital agency.
So, we got started. We acquired the company I was working at, BravoSmart Web Design, to get an initial client list, and we were off to the races.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ever since we went full time, it’s been relatively smooth. One of the founders left the company to pursue other interests about 4 years ago, and that was initially a pretty tough transition. And we’ve had to make some difficult decisions with hiring and firing.
One of the best decisions we made was to move the company to Chicago and open up a full-time office in the West Loop. Chicago is such a great area for this line of work, and we’ve loved it here.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a full-service web agency, so we help clients with every step of a project from initial information architecture to wireframe, design, build, and marketing.
Our unique edge is our focus on user-centered design – we approach design with a relentless focus on the end user of the project. Designing something that is aesthetically pleasing is easy. We strive to take websites to the next level by ensuring that they are designed effectively to help the end user intuitively accomplish their primary goal.
What were you like growing up?
From a very young age, I have had a huge range of interests and I’ve been a voracious reader. I’m fascinated with philosophy, theology, economics, politics, and business. In high school, I was a three-sport athlete, a member of the symphony band and jazz band, on the student council, and a member of the drama club.
With all these interests, it was difficult to decide what I wanted to do with my life. In a different life, I could easily see myself as a pastor, a politician, a professor, or a financial advisor. But I am glad that I chose the entrepreneurial route. I love being able to build something of my own. There are definitely lots of challenges, and lots of long nights, but at the end of the day I love being a small business owner.
