Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Milito.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When my first child was born, I fully grasped the circle of life and suddenly felt the need to capture every moment. Life was now fleeting. I couldn’t fathom how someday this would all be a faint memory. It was then a passion was born. Taking photographs became a way for me to seize the moment.
After realizing that photography was my passion, I began to teach myself every little detail about this artistic outlet. I spent many, many evenings up late learning about the industry, building my website and teaching myself marketing and branding. I had the support of friends and family and opened my business in December of 2013.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The path to building a successful business has been quite a journey and each year has brought a new challenge. My first year in business was the most difficult and demanded the most time and determination. I needed to find clients and build relationships, build a website, hone my craft and find ways to set myself apart from other businesses. And I quickly learned that within each challenge lie several others. As overwhelming and scary starting a new business can be, it is also extremely rewarding. For me, the key to achieving results and rising above each challenge was persistence and truly visualizing success.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kristin Milito Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
When I first opened in 2013 I was a family photographer. I was photographing families, extended families, engagements, children and babies. I felt that this was too much for me and for me personally, it was too general to have a successful business.
I soon found my niche-which has become shooting newborn babies. One of my strengths is being able to achieve what I put my mind to. In this instance, once I knew I wanted to focus on newborn photography, I forged ahead. I took classes and workshops and I studied from some of the best worldwide newborn photographers out there. I did everything I needed to do to put myself in the best position possible to succeed. I studied my craft extensively. The time and commitment I put forth has come back ten fold!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As a business owner, I always need to be planning for the future success of my business. It is also critical that I remain fluid and allow my philosophy and business to ebb and flow with what is changing in my industry. I maintain relationships with other experts in my industry and am happy to say I am a part of a few great organizations with members that support each others growth.
As for personal business changes, I will be relocating my business to a larger studio within the next year. I have outgrown my current space and am really looking forward to a larger studio. In addition, I continue to work on growing my business and catering to some really wonderful parents out there.
