Meet Kimberly Nicasio of Neighborhood Goodz in Portage Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Nicasio.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was younger, I was never a big fan of crafting or doing projects. They always seemed like things that looked nice, but that I could not make look good myself. It wasn’t until I was in my mid-20s and trying to decorate my own home that I realized that if I actually tried some projects, I could do them pretty well and save myself some money by doing so. Around this time I also got into the idea of homemade Christmas/birthday gifts because it seemed like a much more personal touch than simply buying things from the store that thousands of other people have. I made my husband and my brother Chicago star cuff links and after their encouragement, I opened up my Etsy shop with that as my first item for sale.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I constantly think to myself that I want to do more with Neighborhood Goodz, whether it be more markets, getting my items in more stores, etc. The issue I usually run into is finding the time for everything. I have 2 kids and also do weekly kids’ music classes (something else I’m trying to expand!), so when I plan to make things at the end of the day, it is often the case that I flop down to watch TV instead. Luckily my family has been very supportive of my endeavors so they are a huge help in letting me have some time for crafting!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I opened on Etsy in early 2016 after doing a couple markets here and there. Most of my items have something to do with Chicago, though not all of them do; I also make canvases and some kids’ decor items. My love of Chicago and of my family are what motivate me to make the products I consistently make, but I have also been approached by people to make things that aren’t usually in my repertoire. I think my versatility is what I’m most proud of.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Ravenswood and was always playing outside with my neighbors. We played baseball in the alley and soccer under the Damen Brown Line; it was fantastic! That’s usually how I spent my summer days as a kid. I was pretty quiet and shy and didn’t really come out of my shell until college. I really got into music in my early teens and learned guitar and drums, which is another hobby I’m passionate about to this day!
