Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Kovacik.
Kim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started working for a start-up PR company, C1 Revolution, after my freshman year of college. I had just gotten a camera before I started the job because I had an interest in photography. I had an incredible mentor/boss, Ximena Larkin, who not only saw my potential, but helped give me the confidence to pursue this medium. Because of this, I started to take photos for our clients (Portillo’s and Moonlight Studios).
I started managing and taking photos for the Portilllo’s Instagram at 20 years old. This taught me how to create compelling visuals imagery and strategize content on social platform to generate impressions. After I left that job, I started freelancing as a photographer and digital strategist. I started this business at 20 years old; my services consisted of taking photograph and using social media to leverage that content.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When you freelance, there are always unexpected problems that arrive. But it is the times in which we have to quickly think on our feet that we learn from the most. Trusting my intuition and using available resources have helped me along the way.
Please tell us about Kim Kovacik Photography.
I work as a freelance photographer and digital strategist. I help brands tell more visually compelling stories through photography. Not only do I know how to take good photos but I also know how to manage social media accounts, so that the photos reach the most amount of people possible.
I’m most proud of my work for Stan’s Donuts. One of my photos received the highest amount of Instagram likes in over two years. I’m different than most photographers because I can help companies leverage the content I create.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Know your worth. There will always be people out there who will try to take advantage of you and your abilities. Value yourself and know what your time deserves.
In addition, I’ve learned to never stop learning. Never stop trying to be the best and pushing your abilities. We can always be better. It’s detrimental to stagnate.
