Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Quinn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My partner Rick and I started this company in 2015 to fill a need we saw. We both had plenty of history in construction and realized there was a lack of legitimate handymen available to hire. Prior to P’s & Q’s, customers would need to choose between hiring a big box company that would overcharge them or hiring an unknown from down the street that did not carry insurance and provided substandard work. We along with another partner who has since left the company saved up enough money to get started. We went through all the steps to get LLC status, get liability insurance, workers comp, etc. It took a few months of advertising via social media, word of mouth, posters, etc but we finally got our first customer and we have been growing ever since. We find our presence on social media and the referrals we get from customers has allowed us to continue pursuing our dream.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, I would have to say it has been smooth. With every company there are some struggles, however. For P’s & Q’s I would say our biggest challenge was seeing our third partner, Matt, leave the company. Despite the fact we were sad to see him go he has flourished at his new career and we have managed to keep moving forward.
P’s & Q’s Handyman Services – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
P’s & Q’s Handyman Services pretty much says it all. We are handymen and we are jacks of all trades. We specialize in residential repair, remodel, renovation work. We dabble in carpentry, minor electrical, minor plumbing, roof repair, etc. Basically, we are the people to call when you have a job suitable for a handyman. Don’t worry though, we keep our reputation high by making sure we only take jobs we know we can do with high quality, we are not afraid to defer to an expert if need be. I think we are best known for our friendliness, fair prices, and honesty.
What sets us apart from others is quite simple. We are not a big company that will overcharge you because of insane overhead costs. However, we are also a safe choice over “the guy down the street” because we are insured. We are that safe and cost effective middle ground when it comes to work to be done around the house. The thing I am most proud of as a company is our loyalty of many of our customers. When we get called back to a previous customers house or we get a referral from a customer it brings a smile to my face because I know we did our jobs professionally and in a friendly manner.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The moment that sticks out in my mind is a phone call from my Mother. At first, we had to hold onto our day jobs while the company was taking off, so we mostly worked on weekends. After a while the business was picking up and I was deciding on whether or not I should take a risk and go to part time at my job so I could focus more on the business. After talking it over with several people I could not make up my mind until I got a call from my Mom. She told me how proud she was of me and how none of this would have been possible without me. She urged me to pursue my dream and not look back. That day I put in my notice that I would be going part time.
