Meet Kevin Lahvic, Artist in Wicker Park/Bucktown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Lahvic.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a contemporary American artist and lifelong Chicagoan. I reside in my live/work studio in the historic Flat Iron Arts Building.

I do dozens of festival shows each year, as well as the spring and holiday One of a Kind Shows at the Merchandise Mart. In addition, I have a monthly First Friday opening in my Flat Iron studio #222 from 6-10pm.

Private viewings are also available by appointment.

I am primarily a mixed media painter and have several continuing series of works that I am constantly producing for and expanding upon.

I also do both private and corporate commissions.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I feel very fortunate that I have been able to make a comfortable living pursuing what I love.

That said, the economy at times has been challenging.

A very large part of my customer base comes from home/condo owners decorating their residents, as well as companies purchasing for their offices.

The housing/banking crisis caused quite a rough patch about a decade ago in both of those markets… thankfully, things have started to normalize over the past couple of years and sales are increasing.

Kevin Lahvic Artist – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
It makes me very happy to create, and based on the response from the public, there is a very gratifying transfer of that emotion to the viewer.

Expression is a very personal endeavor. I believe the positive, hopeful and “happy” themes of my work help me to stand out among all the wonderful artists working in Chicago.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To hear a sigh, or a laugh from someone looking at one of my pieces, to see a child rush forward and want to touch it, to have someone tell me how happy a piece makes them feel are the most important markers of success to me. Of course, the unavoidable “best” gauge is someone purchasing a piece. : )

Pricing:

  • my prices for original work ranges from $20 to pieces in the thousands.
