Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellen Brown.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It started in 2007 when I moved to Chicago. I needed a job and one that paid fairly well. I found an ad for a moving company needing help, so I applied. I got the job and after about a year I began to see how thing worked. Day to day operations, logistics, and so forth. I saw that I can make just as much money booking the jobs myself and having hired help do the jobs (subcontract out the work). So I made a flyer, website, Social media pages, a Yelp page, and started to market myself as Fast&Reliable Movers. I concentrated on a demographic that move the most, which I found out was college students. Once a few people used my company, the word kind of just spread through word of mouth and I had jobs booked up. I can remember moving some people den when they were freshman all the way through their senior year. I marketed towards other demographics as time went on. Now I love everyone from commercial to residential.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There is a lot of competition out there, when it comes to moving companies. I had to lower my rates just to beat out the competition. I went for more moves at a lower rate instead of a few moves at a higher rate. I don’t have much overhead because I subcontract out the jobs but being a Chicago Mover trying to tap into residential high-rise moves, it’s a demand for top notch insurance. Which can be costly.
Fast&Reliable Movers – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is Fast&Reliable Movers. We are residential and commercial Movers who specializes in last minute and short notice moves. I am truly proud that I have been able to keep the same rate as the years pass. We only charge one rate for a move, with NO extra charges for mileage, gas, or even extra stops.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Being a small company, with just me handling the marketing, booking, logistics, and everything on my own. Booking 5-10 job a week is great. It’s a lot of hard work. I’m the graphic designer for our flyers. I’m the dispatcher for day to day operations. I do it all.
