Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Perkins.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
At age 5, I use to watch America’s Next Top Model (Tyra Banks), Project Runway, Jr. Project Runway and the Disney channel. I was inspired by watching the models ripping the runways and the designers talking about their fashion I started sketching my own designs. While dancing for the Chicago Bulls Jr. Luvabulls I was interviewed by Angela King Design to become a Brand Ambassador of the dance wear she designed for the Chicago bulls Luvabulls and the Jr. Luvabulls. After showcasing the Angela Kings dance wear attire I learned she was hosting a design sketching contest to young girls all over the world. My mom allowed me to enter the contest and I was selected as a winner. I sketched my design, picked out the fabrics and colors and Angela King’s design team made my design come to life. It was at this time I became even more inspired to design my own fashions. Since then I’ve created and designed several fashion pieces that have been worn by myself and models at my very own fashion show in 2016 as well as on models in fashion shows in and around the city. I was recently featured on “Windy City Live Chicago! with models showcasing some of my designs. I was also featured in “Block Chicago. I created my brand to help inspire, encourage, build confidence and self-esteem in young girls. To let them know even if no one believe in them, they must always believe in themselves and set out to live their dreams and reach their goals. I am currently in the process of launching my first ever teen fashion magazine to be called “Raise Your Bar” I use the #Raiseyourbar because that is what I want every young girl to do. I want the youth to know: they do not have to believe they have to be better than anyone else, they have to believe they will be better than they ever imagine they could be”
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has and still sometimes feel it’s a struggle because it’s been hard trying to find someone to mass produce my fashions as well as get companies to help sponsor or invest in me.

Kfab Fashion is a clothing and accessory line that caters to young girls and teens. I design fashions to inspire and build self-esteem in girls. I specialize in dance wear, casual wear, party wear, t-shirts along with accessories such as backpacks, fanny packs, lip gloss, hoodies, jackets and more. I’m known for my fashion designs. I’m really proud of how far I’ve come a fashion designer and how I’m finally getting the opportunity to get exposure and hopefully someone will see what I’m trying to accomplish and invest in me.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I really do feel like our city is a good place for my business. If someone was starting out, I would most definitely recommend the starting here because Chicago has a huge market for fashion. However, I will say our city can improve by having local manufactures that are reasonable in price for production.
