Today we’d like to introduce you to Katlyn DePace.
Katlyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Myself and Kevin, the other co-owner, were working in corporate America, typical 9-5 jobs. We wanted to do something that was impactful for people’s lives. Being big into health and fitness we decided to open a cycling gym. Us teaching might be a small part of their day but we want it to be a good part. We want our clients to leave feeling good, accomplished and sweaty. Anyone can teach a class, and tell you to do this or do that. Our goal is to change their mind. How you think, how you feel, and really getting down to your why.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been an adventure as it is for any small business starting out but we have found that standing out and getting people to try something new is a challenge. The Naperville community is so active with so many great health and fitness options in the downtown area. That being said our biggest strength is we offer a service that hasn’t been regularly available in this area until now.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Handlebars Cycling Gym and Health Bar – what should we know?
We offer hour long cycling classes, 7 days a week in a small boutique setting. Our smaller setting gives us the opportunity to get to know our customers and it also allows us to give everyone a proper bike fit for a comfortable ride in a quick, efficient manner. We try to our client’s workouts as fun by getting people to loosen up and have fun while getting fit! We personally create all of our classes to be different and fun having a trivia class or a themed class and sometime even karaoke!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
What has been important to our success is building community within our studio and classes with our clients. Getting to know not only their name but something about their life, goals and how we can help them. Building that relationship brings that sense of community which is then shared among the clients. People come to class early to catch up with their new friends! It’s really great to see.
