Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Dahlenburg.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started my business a little after my son was born. I suffered from extreme postpartum depression and anxiety, and was looking for a creative outlet to free my mind. I began with crocheting accessories, like headbands and hats, and soon realized my passion went further than just one fiber art. After teaching myself countless new crochet stitches, I realized I wanted a bigger challenge, so I took up knitting. After knitting became an ease, I taught myself how to weave and macramé, and the rest is history.
Please tell us about your art.
Lately, I been focusing mostly on wall-hangings, incorporating multiple fiber arts into one piece. I’ve been weaving blank slates and embroidering them, or exploring variations with weaving and macramé.
My inspiration is mostly nature, but also ease. I try to let all my pieces be one of a kind and organic. I don’t replicate anything, unless it’s part of a class I’m teaching. My goal is to ultimately create things that are one of a kind, and that speak to everyone differently. I’m definitely not on the wagon of mass produced goods, and highly enjoy unique fiber combinations and artistry.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I think the greatest advice I have for other artists is, don’t discredit your time or creativity. Know your worth, and don’t undercharge for you time or materials. Growing a small business is like nursing a sprout, it takes time and dedication, no one becomes successful overnight. Be kind to yourself, and know you are worth it.
