Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Superfine.
Kara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Armed with a degree in horticulture, I joined the event industry, working for a boutique event planning & design firm where I was brought on to design client’s weddings and special events. I adored working with clients and couples to shape their wedding or event style. After just a short while, however, I was introduced to the planning & logistical end of weddings and events – gaining an immense amount of experience at a very young and raw (fresh-out-of-college) age.
After a few years, I joined a wedding & event design firm, re-shifting my focus back to the floral & design process of weddings and special events. Here, I learned how to truly listen to my clients…to take fragmented thoughts and ideas and dreams and to weave them into a beautifully cohesive wedding or special event.
It was after a number of years, however, that I started to feel limited in my partnership with my clients. Ultimately, I loved guiding couples and clients through the entire wedding planning process, not just the floral and decor side of things. I knew it was time to get back into the planning side of weddings and, at that time, I joined a well-respected wedding planning firm.
In 2014, after a number of years with the same company, I started my own boutique wedding planning & design company, Kara Superfine Events. The transition was seamless and spectacular. With over 12 years of experience, at the time, I was finally able to offer clients of my own a planning partnership that was thorough, fun and deeply rooted in my love of design.
Currently, I work with a limited number of discerning clients – still listening and hearing – still plotting and planning – still dreaming & designing every detail of their wedding or event.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been lucky to have built a reputation for myself that I am so proud of. Integrity and respect are paramount to me, and looking back over my career I can truly say that I am so appreciative of every step of my journey. You learn so much from others…what to do, what not to do. Every experience along the way has somehow helped me shape my business.
All of that said, balance has always been one of my greatest struggles…I so often had to remind myself that I was planning pretty parties, and wasn’t saving lives. I would work weekends & evenings (in addition to regular business hours) and was on the verge of burn-out many times.
Starting my own business has been the greatest gift. I always had the support of my amazing husband, but for the first time ever, I have found a truly wonderful balance between my incredible little family and my amazing clients.
Kara Superfine Events – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Kara Superfine Events is a boutique wedding & event planning firm with over 15 years of experience. While I can put together a 10-page timeline in an afternoon, coordinate transportation in my sleep and manage an elite roster of vendors with a smile…my experience with design makes my process quite unique. I love to help develop my clients wedding style, ensuring it is woven throughout every element of the celebration…from printables to attire, decor to entertainment and so on.
And, just because it is my job to ensure EVERYTHING gets done smoothly and on time, it doesn’t mean there isn’t room for fun along the way! So many of my clients remain friends (and even assistants!) to this day because I value the relationship with my clients so much.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is feeling a deep sense of pride in every aspect of what I do. I am so proud that I am so well respected and supported within our industry. I feel pride in the amazing relationships I develop during the planning process. I am so proud when I see the complete and overwhelming joy on my client’s faces when they see their reception for the first time. I feel pride when I hug my clients (and their awesome families) tightly, when the celebration finally comes to an end…knowing it was absolutely perfect and wanting to do it all again, without changing a thing. I am proud that I still passionately love what I do, after 15 years.
