Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Titus.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the practice, why don’t you give our readers a few quick bullet points about you and your story.
Born Dallas, TX, volunteered to do a one-time praise dance at 15 with a group of friend.
We eventually became known as Genesis. 1 year later transitioned into mime after having witness a very dynamic duo called the Wandering Mimes!
Founded the Prairie View A&M University Mime Ministry in 2004 (aka Pv mime). Now celebrating over 15 years on campus and counting.
2008 moved to Baltimore Maryland for graduate school and started performing solo acts under the stage name “Titus Mime”
Moved to Chicago in 2011 and began working with the youth (mostly teenagers) coaching and teaching mime dance at Trinity United church of Christ, Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church and St. Stephens A.M.E Church. Using mime to help develop confidence, life skills and help stay off the streets by giving them a way to express themselves.
Author of “How to Mime & Praise Dance for Maximum Results” – a step by step guide to pleasing God through dance. Which can be purchased on Amazon.com
Producer/Director of “Me, Myself and Mime” which is a traveling theater show about mime ministry. “Me, Myself and Mime” is also mini documentary film (currently being worked on)!
Recently, performed in a live taping for an all mime and praise dance television show in Atlanta entitled, “Dancing My way to Jesus” featuring some of the nation’s best performers in the field of mime and praise dance. Will be aired on Word Network, TBN and various other faith based television networks starting in September.
Today I continue to mime at various events solo or with teams across the country. With the intent to spread the gospel in a unique way and shed light on a niche art-form that is spreading across the country.
Titus Mime also participates in and conducts workshops and is in process of producing the next mime dance theatrical production entitled. “The Gospel According to Mime.”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No it has not been a smooth road.
A lot of the struggle has been in figuring out how to pursue my passion and make a living doing it. The struggle has been in really going for it all full-time and seeing how things pan out.
Secondly, in producing theater and film the main struggle is in finding sponsorships to make it happen and profitable for everyone involved.
Other struggles along the way have been in dealing with situations regarding the violence on the south and west side of Chicago and trying to mentor the youth. Helping teenagers navigate through friends and family being shot, killed or simply passing away and somehow giving them the tools they need to cope is always a challenge.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Titus Mime Ministry – what should we know?
Titus Mime LLC is a production company that specializes in the art-form of gospel Mime dancing with the vision of spreading the gospel and inspiring the world through mime.
What I’m most proud of to-date is the “Me, Myself and Mime” project because it grew from a small audience with free admission to touring in Dallas, TX at a major performing arts theater with a large audience and over 1,000 tickets sold.
what sets us apart from others is that Titus Mime has an immense amount of experience and partners with the best artist in the field of mime dance to give audiences around the world a true feel of the impact that mime is having not just in churches but in other venues as well.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yes my family (Mother, God mother, sister) who have supported me since day one.
The guys that I started with in Genesis Mime
The wandering mimes- if it wasn’t for them there would not have been a Genesis and of course not a Titus Mime
All of the brothers who founded the P.V. Mime Ministry with me on the Campus of Prairie View. All of the past, present and future members of p.v. mime who continue to keep the ministry going and thriving.
All of the Churches here in Chicago that entrusted me to lead and teach their youth in mime, but also gave me a platform to showcase my talent and grow. (Trinity United Church of Christ, Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, St. Stephens A.M.E Church
All of the people who are my repeat “customers” who ask me to come perform whether here in Chicago, Dallas or anywhere in the country.
All of the people that donated or sponsored my dream to produce a theatrical show despite all the odds (The Wilkins Family, TJ and the lil Lizzie foundation, Impact Church in Dallas, TX)
