Today we’d like to introduce you to Judith Mullen.
Judith, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From an early age, I knew that the act of making was something I enjoyed as a means of communicating with those around me. Spending time in nature was a natural means for me to learn about myself and the world. Today walking in a forested area continues to be a daily part of my studio practice. Here, the tree-forms act as a metaphor, respite, teacher and a model for my overall art practice where I combine many mediums and textures. The resilience of the tree and its’ adaptability to changes in the landscape is a model I use to express our shared human desire for strength and courage. In my paintings, the tree is represented by references to bark and other skin-like materials by layering paint and collage materials. Employing an unconventional working process and use of materials I build up layers and embrace chance effects to point to our intimate connection to the ever changing and resilience of nature. The tree branch is found literally at the center or attached to sculptures acting as a stabilizer in the intuitive process of making.
My mode of gathering and combining found, upcycled and recycled materials which can be woven into figurative sculptures, nest-like assemblages, and wall installations mimics the ritual and repetition of walking in the forest. Interweaving or layering of materials speaks to a balance between strength and fragility. Through my work and process, I present form and meaning as ritual and repetition in an effort to open up possibilities for the viewer to consider in their own lives.
Has it been a smooth road?
Although I knew at a young age that I would eventually be working as an artist there was no script for me to follow to achieve my goals. My journey to full-time art making has been slow but steady and I am grateful for all the experiences, both difficult and joyful, as everything contributes to my work.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Judith Mullen Studios – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
In the studio, I enjoy working with curators, colleagues and introducing the public to my work.
