Today we’d like to introduce you to John Marino.
John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a young adult I experienced the usual ups and downs of life, but my transition into adult hood was met with much difficulty. The sudden stressors of paying bills, juggling classes and trying to start a career as a musician left me knocking at the door of the doctor’s office. After a diagnosis of depression and anxiety, I felt like there must be another path. I spent many years searching through doctors, chiropractors, yoga instructors and meditation coaches. I discovered Chinese Medicine and it helped me face my problems naturally. Through a combination of acupuncture, Chinese Herbs and martial arts, I was able to defeat my panic attacks and my life had new hope! I decided that this is what I wanted to do as a career. Since embarking on this journey, I have picked up a degree in Asian Body Work and a Master’s in Chinese Medicine. Now I own my own practice and I teach at a college in Chicago’s Loop.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many challenges along the way, but what is life without challenges? As a young aspiring musician, I paid my bills by working in the restaurant industry. The balance between becoming a healer and spending nights in clubs was a little difficult for me. Then there was school. Acupuncture school is no picnic. Lasting almost four long years, I spent many hours studying and interning in the clinic. The last challenge I had was starting my own business. It was a risk and very difficult to be my own boss, but I haven’t looked back and I love every minute of it!
Please tell us about John Marino Acupuncture.
My business is an acupuncture and massage practice. I work in multiple locations, one being a group of others like me in the Lakeview area. I specialize in pain management and emotional problems. I am very active physically and I understand what it’s like to suffer from injury. With such a growing rate of pain pill and heroin addiction in this country, it is very important to find other treatments to help people deal with their pain. I believe that the connection between the body and mind is one that cannot be ignored. When someone suffers from back pain then they will also suffer emotionally, and on the flip side, when one suffers emotionally then they will often suffer from physical pain. I strive to help people see this connection and then find a way to either relieve them of that or work through it. I have a slightly different approach than other acupuncturists in that I also believe in using a little massage and/or cupping in a treatment. This not only adds to the effectiveness of the treatment, but it requires me to spend more time with the patient.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When my dad bought me my first drum set. I remember sitting down and trying to play every Led Zeppelin song that he would blast in the car.
