Today we’d like to introduce you to John Lyons.
John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Have you ever watched Steve Jobs 2006 Standford Graduation commencement speech? I love his story of connecting the dots and how it’s impossible to connect the dots looking forward. Maybe this story speaks to me because I made a bold move in Feb 2013 to leave a successful career selling medical device capital equipment to become a real estate broker. As scary as it was to make that decision; looking back it’s been one of the best decisions I have ever made.
So why did I make the career change? I jumped into real estate because I loved how owning property and my home made me feel. But most importantly I jumped into real estate because I knew there was a real need for a professional to help people find value in the marketplace when they buy to educate people on who to maximize their transaction when they sell. I love my job because I can make a direct positive impact on someone’s life by helping them with these two points.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My first year in real estate I had to solve two problems. 1.) I had no experience 2.) I only knew a couple people in the city since I was transferred there from my prior career.
To solve problem 1) the “experience problem, I read as many books as I could on real estate and I followed and I continue to follow the methods and systems the best brokers in the industry use through podcasts, seminars, and coaching.
To solve problem #2 of not knowing very many people in Chicago, I advertised on Zillow and went to as many network event that I could with the objective of giving so much value that people would either want to do business with me or refer me to someone who does.
My first half year I sold 3.5 million. My second year I sold 6.5. My 3rd 9.5million and last year Sold just under 11 million. I don’t really see myself as selling real estate but helping people make decisions and solve problems that will add to the quality of their life.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about John Lyons Real Estate – what should we know?
John Lyons Real Estate is a company of two:-) me and my assistant. I specialize in listing and selling residential real estate from the South Loop to the north side of Chicago.
My primary goal is to help people make decisions that will improve the quality of their life. Whether you are buying or selling, my services are detailed and comprehensive. From consulting on how to stage a property before listing, to hiring contractors, attorneys or mortgage brokers for buying – My object is to help you connect the dots and make the transactions as smooth as possible.
My approach when working with buyers and sellers is to first educate. There is A LOT of information out there and it can be confusing for the consumer to understand without a fiduciaries guidance. I’ve found that breaking things down and educating gives my client’s confidence to make the right decision for them.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am am constantly reading and looking to learn news things to help people. I think this quality helps me be of service and relevant in the market place.
