Today we’d like to introduce you to John Krug.
John and Maryanne, please share your story with us.
When I finished my Master’s degree at Boston University, my wife and I moved to NWI, where I went to work for a large contract therapy company. After 8 1/2 years, we parted ways, and I went to work on my own, doing contract work in an out-patient office and a nursing home. The workload increased, and I purchased the out-patient business in Merrillville, IN, and continued the contract work. Soon it became too much to handle, and I urged my sister, Maryanne, who finished PT school at Northeastern University 3 years after I moved to IN, to join me in my practice. That was 1989, and we are still working together.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been struggles. As an independent physical therapy practice, we have seen competition increase from other providers over the years. These include physicians, chiropractors, hospitals, and corporations who have entered the rehabilitation market. The number of locations offering therapy services has multiplied. Our reputation with our patients, referral sources, and insurers has sustained us. We have many repeat customers and patients who were referred by former patients.
Please tell us about ProCare Physical Therapy.
Usually, John is working as administrator of the Medicare certified Rehab Agency, ProCare Physical Therapy, PC, taking care of the business side, and Maryanne is doing the hands-on physical therapy treatment. John also manages the outside contract aspect of the business. ProCare is now 30 years old, and is located in Crown Point, IN. The practice treats adolescent and adult patients, specializing in musculoskeletal problems. In addition to the customary physical therapy equipment, they do computerized balance testing and treatment using a Biodex system. We are known for being hands-on, and taking all the time needed to work with our patients, to help them attain the highest level of function possible.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Spending time with family. We had a rather large extended family that we were able to visit with often. We had a great time together.
